About the Clay
Most clay masks are made from a single mineral — typically bentonite — mined in bulk from alkaline dry lake beds. Maui Mask is a rare Hawaiian volcanic clay hand-harvested from our family farm in Haiku, Maui. It contains a complex mineral matrix including allophane, imogolite, halloysite, kaolinite, and bentonite — minerals rarely found together in commercial skincare.
Human skin has a natural pH of 4.5–5.5. Many popular clay masks — particularly those made from bentonite — have a pH near 9 or 10, which is highly alkaline. This can strip your skin's natural protective barrier, causing dryness, irritation, and rebound oiliness.
Maui Mask is naturally pH 5.5 — perfectly matched to your skin. It cleanses and purifies without disrupting your microbiome or moisture barrier.
No — and that's one of the key differences. Apple cider vinegar is commonly recommended with high-pH bentonite clays to bring the pH down to a more skin-friendly level. Because Maui Mask is already naturally pH 5.5, no vinegar is needed. Simply mix with water, honey, or yogurt.
Our Hawaiian Volcanic Clay contains a rare combination of volcanic minerals formed over thousands of years as basaltic parent rock weathers under tropical conditions. Key minerals include allophane and imogolite (extremely rare volcanic clay minerals), halloysite (a tubular volcanic clay), kaolinite (a gentle cleansing clay), bentonite (for deep pore cleansing), and ferrihydrite (natural iron oxide pigments that give the clay its warm amber color).
Because our clay is a natural product harvested by hand in small batches, slight variations in color are normal and expected. This reflects the living nature of the clay.
From the moment the clay is harvested from our pristine meadow, it never contacts plastic. We harvest with natural untreated wood tools, dry and process in stainless steel, glass, and cotton, then package directly into glass jars.
The only plastic component in our entire process is the industry-standard foam seal inside the lid, included to protect against small amounts of clay powder leaking into the threads during transit. If you would prefer a completely plastic-free experience, simply add a note at checkout requesting we omit the foam seal.
Using Maui Mask
Combine equal parts Maui Mask powder and your chosen liquid (water, honey, or yogurt) to form a smooth paste. One teaspoon of powder is enough for a full facial. Apply evenly to clean skin, avoiding the eye area. Leave on for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Pat dry and follow with your usual moisturizer.
Water — the classic choice. Activates the clay's natural drawing and cleansing power for a pure, clarifying experience suitable for all skin types.
Honey — adds natural humectants and enzymes for a luminous, glowing result. Great for dry or dull skin.
Yogurt — lactic acid and probiotics pair beautifully with our pH-balanced clay for deep moisture and gentle renewal. Ideal for sensitive or mature skin.
We recommend once or twice per week for most skin types. If you have sensitive skin, start with once per week and see how your skin responds. Daily use is not recommended — clay masks are a treatment, not a daily cleanser.

Yes — in fact, our naturally skin-matched pH of 5.5 makes Maui Mask particularly well suited for sensitive skin. High-pH clay masks can cause irritation and redness for sensitive skin types. We still recommend a patch test before your first full facial application: apply a small amount to your inner wrist, leave for 10 minutes, and rinse. If no reaction occurs after 24 hours, proceed with normal use.
Each jar yields approximately: 3 oz — up to 20 facial applications. 6 oz — up to 40 facial applications. 12 oz — up to 80 facial applications. These estimates are based on using approximately 1 teaspoon per facial application. You can stretch further by using slightly less, or use more generously for a thicker application.
